WikiLook : Dictionary right under your mouse pointer - [Firefox Extention]

Are you one of those who likes to read much online but hates to open a new tab and search for an unknown word’s meaning each time ? WikiLook is the solution then.

WikiLook is a nice Firefox extention which allows you to see the defination of a word from dictionary without requiring to open a new tab or window.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/images/preview/7675/1

How to use:
1. Press Shift
2. Move mouse pointer just a bit, still holding it over selected word.
3. Wait half a second.
The other way, moving mouse first and then pressing Shift will not work, to make sure add-on won’t interfere, when user decided to type some text..

—or—

1. Highlight any word or idiom with your mouse.
2. Move mouse pointer just a bit, still holding it over selected word.
3. Wait half a second.

Gives me just another reason to use Firefox.

Install WikiLook

Unscramble, find, rhyme or define that word!

Words

It is not uncommon to find oneself in a “play with words” situation. Some time we need to find the rhyming words for a poetry or just unscramble the letters to form a word. Unscramble makes this work easier.

Some other good services offered by Unscramble are:

CROSSWORD FINDER

Just enter the word with ‘?’ to indicate missing letters and it will tell you the word.

FIND

Enter the letters of the beginning, middle or end of the word to find it (sometimes helpful in searching good domain names).

DICTIONARY

Definitions, synonyms, antonyms and related words can be easily searched for.

I often use Unscramble to cheat online word games or solve the puzzles.

Wordie is for people who love words. Start by making word lists: words you love, words you hate, words on a given topic, whatever. Add citations, comments, and tags. See who else has listed the same words.

Try our the Wordie RSS feeds

4) Mnemonic Dictionary

Unlike ordinary dictionaries this dictionary not only gives you meaning of words but also a key mnemonic to retain that meaning of words for long time in our memory.http://content.screencast.com/media/14019fa1-1a92-4323-960d-12d8f471b350_04102077-d550-4ca6-b12f-104f633cfc29_static_0_0_2008-06-02_2031.png

An example from Mnemonic Dictionary :

Word — abase

Meaning — lower; degrade; humiliate; make humble; make (oneself) lose self-respect

Mnemonic — abase means without base and without base things fall down — so degrade (just imagine a house without a strong base)

Just see how easy it is to remember meaning of abase using mnemonic.

5) Word of the day

Word of the dayAnother trick worth trying is adding the “Word of the Day” feed offered by various web-sites. These feeds can be easily added to your favourite feed reader site/program and help you enhance your vocabulary.

Following are some of the best “Word of the Day” providers:

Dictionary.com Word of the Day | Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day | Wordsmith.org: Today’s Word

Old-School-Method

In the end, if you want to keep away from the computer and still wanna improve your vocabulary then the “old-school-method” is still the best. Keep a handy small diary with yourself and write the interesting words and phrases as you come around them. Share those with your friends (as you do on “Wordie”) and show off your vocabulary.

So try the methods above and share the ones you like the most.
