15 must-have Firefox tricks

Stumbled Upon some great tricks for firefox which would make your browsing experience much faster and secure. One of the best tricks was enabling the pipelining feature in Firefox.

Speed up Firefox with pipelining

Here’s a simple way to speed up Web browsing with Firefox — turn on its hidden pipelining feature. When you turn on pipelining, you send several requests to a Web server at a time, rather than sending them one by one, so you can load multiple items on a page concurrently. By default, pipelining is turned off in Firefox, but it’s easy to turn it on:

  1. Type about:config into your address bar and hit Enter.
  2. In the Filter text box, at the top of the page, type network.http. A list of settings appears, as you can see in the nearby figure.
  3. Double-click the “network.http.pipelining” setting, to change it to true.
  4. Double-click the “network.http.proxy.pipelining” setting, to change it to true.
  5. Double-click the “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” setting, and in the text box that appears, type in 8 and click OK.

Note that not all Web servers can handle pipelining. If for some reason, you find that your performance suffers with it turned on, reverse the above steps to turn it off.

Display random feed items – [How To]

FeedBurner has a nice option of BuzzBoost which republishes the feeds as HTML. It would have been better had there been an option of random items.

However, one can use Yahoo! Pipes to get that done. Here is how:

  1. Goto the Random Feed Pipe
  2. Put in your RSS Feed Address (eg. http://feeds.feedburner.com/fullyfaltoo )
  3. Run Pipe
  4. and there is your list of random feed items :D (very simple - isn’t it ? )

At this point one can use the default Badge option to showoff the feeds and embed on a web-page or still better, re-burn this feed on FeedBurner and use the BuzzBoost (click “more options” at pipes page » Get as RSS » copy this URL and re-burn it on FeedBurner).

Cleaning the corners of the LCDs is one of the tough jobs.

One of the most effective ways to clean it is using Post-It Notes. Stick the gummed side on the corner and peel it off. It will remove the dust without leaving any residue.

Master the Google - Search Like a God & Save Time →

Use 3 cool tricks to enhance your searching abilities

(1) Fine Tune

Operators are functional words or signs that tell the search engine how to connect or separate the given search terms. The most important ones are…

  • AND or +
With “AND” or “+” you can link words, so all linked terms are included in the search results. I’m adding this to give a complete collection. Google automatically searches for all given terms.
Example: sun AND moon or sun +moon
Note the “AND” must be in caps and there is no space after the “+”.
  • OR or |
Use these to search for either term.
Example: sun OR moon or sun | moon
Note that again “OR” must be in caps, but in this case there is a space after the “|”.
  • ” “
Putting terms in a quote indicates a sentence and will be searched for exactly in this composition.
Example: “the sun lights up the moon”

Make Your Computer Automatically Perform Tasks For You

Work LoadGot a whole lot of work this weekend cause your boss in on the leave ? Don’t worry, macros are here to save you.

What are Macros ?

Macros are the set of instructions which are used to automate the tasks and repeat them in an automatic fashion if needed.

Tools ?

There are many and the easiest as well as my favourite is  AutoHotKey.

AutoHotKey is an easy to use macro creator which supports scripts as well as screen recorder.

http://content.screencast.com/media/da67c271-c85c-4f26-8327-d7682c6abf3d_04102077-d550-4ca6-b12f-104f633cfc29_static_0_0_2008-05-31_0746.png

The scripts are easy to write and understand with huge capabilities. The No Thick Manuals wiki has a nice introductory tutorial for automating Windows with the easy-to-learn AutoHotkey scripting language.

Bored at the airport? Read a free magazine!

image

Here is a nifty service, courtesy of Zinio. Apple iPhone users can browse full versions of 20 different magazines for free. Titles include Macworld, Lonely Planet, Popular Photography, Playboy and Penthouse.

But here is what makes it cooler; if you trick your browser into thinking it’s an iPhone, you can actually read these magazines for free on your desktop/laptop (PC or Mac).

You’ll need to change the “user agent” on your browser, which is easy to do in Safari or Firefox. In Safari just follow these instructions, and on Firefox you can add this extension and add the following iPhone user agent:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/4A102 Safari/419 (United States)

image

After that, simply point your desktop browser to this link and enjoy these free quality publications. If you are really smart, you can even download them locally to your computer to read on the flight.
